Bathroom Plumbing FAQs

Why is my toilet running?

The common causes for toilets to run are also usually easy fixes, but if you don’t have a lot of plumbing experience or you suspect there could be a larger problem, it’s best to call out a plumber. Usually, though, the issue is with one of three things:

  • The flapper, which is what stops water from leaving the tank unless you’ve flushed;
  • The float, which is a part that rises with the water level as the tank refills and tells the flapper when to open or close;
  • Or, the fill valve, which controls when and how much water enters the tank after you’ve flushed.

Why is sewage backing up into my drains?

Most often, it is because there are blockages or clogs in the sewer line, like tree roots or toys or the accumulation of things like grease that shouldn’t be dumped into wastewater pipes. Especially in older homes, the issue could be the pipe itself – it might be made of a material that inevitably will erode and break, and it might need to be replaced with plastic pipes.

What is the difference between copper and plastic pipes?

Copper and plastic pipes are both popular choices for plumbing pipes for their durability and lifespan. One major difference between them is cost – copper pipes are often very expensive, especially in relation to plastic options. Plastic pipes can usually last indefinitely, but some types aren’t good at transporting hot water, which must be taken into consideration. Copper pipes are recyclable when their time in plumbing comes to an end, sometimes more than 50 years after installation.

Why has my water pressure dropped?

Most likely, something has gotten into your drain that shouldn’t be there. In the shower, hair has probably clumped together in your pipes to create a blockage. In either the shower or sink drain, soap residue and toothpaste residue can build up and cause clogs, as well.

How can I prevent a clogged drain?

The best way to prevent a clogged drain is to keep particles of anything falling into it. Put a catcher in your drain to catch things like hair, soap residue, and toothpaste residue. Regular drain cleaning can also help.

When is it time to replace bathroom fixtures?

Most bathroom fixtures are built to last for over a decade with a normal amount of wear and tear. The top signs that it’s time to replace one is that it’s leaking, it is in poor condition (for example, a tub that won’t clean or rust on a sink or faucet), it’s otherwise broken, or the cost of repairs is a significant portion of just replacing the fixture altogether.
