Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install, repair, or otherwise service my water heater myself?
Handy homeowners can handle some water heater maintenance and repairs. We advise against installing a new water heater yourself, especially if it’s a different system from the previous one, because you may unintentionally make a mistake, void your warranty, not install it to building code, or otherwise set yourself up for a future visit by your plumber anyway.
How do I know if my water heater is failing?
The obvious sign of a failing water heater is only getting cold water, but it’s not the only sign. Here are some other symptoms to look out for:
- The water temperature is wildly inconsistent or never above lukewarm.
- Your water heater is leaking.
- Your water pressure is low.
- Water is coming from your tap discolored or with a metallic scent.
- Your water heater is making weird noises.
- You’re making repairs that will cost more in the long run than buying a brand new water heater would cost.
- You get hot water, but it runs out quickly.
- Your utility bills are higher than usual, but your usage hasn’t changed.
If your water heater has water dripping or pooling around the base of the tank, you need a plumber as soon as possible. This is a sign of an irreparable internal issue, and if it’s not handled, it can turn into a much more serious problem than replacing your water heater.
How often should I have my water heater serviced?
Generally, how often you should service your water heater depends on what kind you have, as well as how hard your water is, what the local weather conditions are on average, and more. As a rule of thumb, having your unit serviced once a year or so is ideal; more often is better if you have hard water in order to prevent too much sediment build up.
